Why do potatoes make the best private investigators?

If you’ve never considered using the services of a private investigator, it’s very possible that your only points of reference will be TV series like Magnum PI, Poirot and Hetty Wainthropp investigates.  While entertaining, the reality is a world away from dodgy phone taps, murder mysteries and beachfront Hawaiian estates.

So what is a private investigator (or ‘PI)?  A PI, private detective or enquiry agent works on a private basis and acts on the instruction of individuals, organisations or the legal profession to undertake investigative tasks.  Although many have backgrounds in law enforcement, PIs work independently of the police and enjoy no special powers or status because of their job.

That being said, PIs can help their clients access information and evidence that might otherwise be beyond their reach.  Professional PIs are skilled in investigative techniques.  As well as ensuring that investigative opportunities are exploited, their tradecraft ensures that evidence in a way that procedurally correct so that it bears future scrutiny.  And because a PI acts on their client’s instructions, their discretion in sensitive private and professional matters can be invaluable.

PIs undertake wide-ranging work.  While some specialise in areas such as digital forensics, many – like me – are more generalist in offering a broader range of services.  From criminal, employment and family investigations to the investigation of insurance claims, brand protection, people tracing and more, PIs can prove invaluable when it comes to protecting precious personal and commercial interests.

With so much at stake, choosing a reputable investigator can seem daunting.  Despite much lobbying, the UK’s investigation industry is still unregulated, meaning that unprofessional and (sometimes) unscrupulous operators remain free to practice.  In finding a reliable PI, the Association of British Investigators’ (ABI) membership directory is a good start point.  ABI members are regularly vetted to ensure that they meet the Association’s exacting standards, meaning that the necessary due diligence been completed.  Furthermore, the ABI is the only industry group to partner with the Law Society, which recommends the Association as the go-to organisation to its own members.

What benefits does using a PI bring?  Well, as with other types of professional assistance, a PI’s services ought to be regarded as an investment.  They must be able create value in the setting in which they operate.  From the outset, the professional PI will provide honest advice, explain the benefits of their involvement, and be transparent about their limitations.  With all this information in mind, you should be well-placed to make an informed decision.

If you are seeking a PI’s services in Humberside and northern Lincolnshire, consider Trusted Eye.  While our rates are competitive, our commitment to quality is uncompromising.  For much of our work, we charge a modest hourly fee of £45, although we also offer discounted rates for half- and full-day engagements.  And our fixed price process serving fees start at just £60.

And if you're still wondering why potatoes make the best investigators, it's because they always have their eyes peeled ...

In my next article, I'll talk about whether it's possible to obtain the services of a private investigator for free.
